Best Historical Romance Novels (My Cozy, Curated Favorites)

There’s something so soothing and escapist about curling up with a steamy historical romance. Like I literally feel transported to the Victorian era!

The gowns. The scandals. The yearning. The forbidden tension. The slow-burn glances across candlelit ballrooms.

It just hits different.

As much as I love my fantasy girlies and my contemporary romances, historical romance will always feel like a cozy little escape for me. A warm cup of tea. A soft blanket. A world where the stakes are high, reputations are fragile, and the lore is even better.

If you’re more in your magical era, I also put together a list of Romantasy I adore in Romantasy by Black Authors: Stories Where Black Women Are Magical and Loved. Different vibe, same emotional intensity.

If you loved Bridgerton, or you just love getting whisked away into another era, these are some of the best historical romance novels I’ve read. And yes… they still live in my head rent-free.

Some are part of longer series, but you can absolutely read them on their own and still enjoy every delicious moment.

Educating Caroline by Patricia Cabot

Regency-era scandal, tension, and steam.

Caroline is determined to win back her fiancé after discovering his wandering eye. Instead of crumbling, she does something bold. She seeks out the infamous rake, Braden Granville, to teach her how to be more confident. More sensual. More irresistible.

And listen!!!!!!

When do the “lessons” start turning into feelings? You feel that shift. It’s intense, and the yearning is bone deep!

And Caroline is honestly the sweetest character, and I enjoyed watching her grow into herself and kinda have her own sexual awakening along the way too. She doesn’t shrink but grows. And Braden is basically the bad boy whom everyone secretly wants. The heart that couldn’t be stolen.

This one is playful and spicy, but also surprisingly empowering.

If you love a heroine with backbone and a hero who slowly realizes he is in deeper than he planned, this one is cozy and delicious.

An Improper Proposal by Patricia Cabot

Adventure at sea with a rugged, tender love interest? Immediately yes.

This was probably the first spicy historical romance novel I ever read. I read this in high school and I still remember how obsessed my friends and I were with the main man. He’s protective without being suffocating. Masculine, but soft where it counts.

Payton Dixon dreams of sailing the seas even though society insists that isn’t her place. She also happens to have a longstanding crush on Captain Connor Drake, who is equal parts impossible and irresistible.

Through a twist of fate, she ends up aboard his ship.

The chemistry is immediate. Dramatic. Charged. The book is HAWT!

It’s adventurous but still grounded in that emotional, slow-build connection that makes historical romance so addictive.

Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks

Feuding clans. Rugged landscapes. Forbidden marriage.

This book drops you straight into the Scottish Highlands and refuses to let you leave. Okay so our MFC is deaf from a childhood accident but has learned to read lips. Everyone around her treats her as if she is made of glass.

Then in comes Graeme Montgomery. Now this is a MAN! He is large and protective and the leader of a rival clan. Their clans are rivals and they decide that hte best way to bury the hatchet is the marry Eveline to Graeme.

Graeme is doing this for the betterment of his clan. He has no idea how this fragile and mute/deaf woman will survive on his land, but he’s taking one for the team. Eveline is also forced into this marriage of convenience.

Now what is supposed to be a political alliance and nothing more turns into something else.

Something tender. Protective. Healing.

Graeme is fiercely loyal and unexpectedly gentle. And there is more to our MFC than meets the eye. Watching him slowly realize the depth of his feelings is everything, and reading about Eveline becoming strong was powerful.

If you love emotional intimacy paired with strong physical chemistry, this one grips you early and does not let go.

Devil’s Bride by Stephanie Laurens

High society. Mystery. Heat. That’s it. That’s the tweet.

Devil Cynster is a charming, slightly dangerous viscount who gets caught alone with Honoria Wetherby in a very compromising situation. And because this is historical romance and women couldn’t even breathe wrong without consequences, he immediately proposes. Being found alone with a man back then? Basically social exile.

The ton is shocked. The most eligible bachelor going after Honoria? The “boring,” respectable one? Please.

Except she’s not boring at all.

At the same time, Devil’s best friend is murdered, and he’s determined to find out who did it. And honestly? Honoria loves a little adventure. So of course she inserts herself into the investigation. As she should.

Their dynamic is sharp and bantery and a little intense. If you love witty back-and-forth where the man thinks he’s in control but he absolutely is not… you’ll eat this up. Everyone underestimated Honoria, but she’s lively, smart, and has a sharp tongue when she needs it.

The mix of suspense and romance makes it feel layered instead of just ballroom flirting. It’s candlelight. Silk gowns. Secrets. Tension you can feel.

If you like historical romance with actual intrigue and not just longing stares across a drawing room, this one delivers.

Almost Heaven by Judith McNaught

Elizabeth gets “ruined,” which at this time basically means her marriage prospects evaporate overnight. So instead of debutante balls and eligible bachelors, she’s living this quiet, almost widow-like life at Havenhurst. Just existing. Reputationally done.

Years pass.

She’s the one single-handedly holding her household together because her brother? Love him, but he is not dependable. He gambles, he disappears, he makes questionable decisions. She knows exactly who he is, but that’s still her family, so she protects him and carries the weight.

With her brother gone and her uncle stepping in as guardian, the pressure ramps up. He’s determined to marry her off, and at this point it’s giving, “You will marry someone. I do not care if he is 102.” It’s less romance and more transaction.

And right when things start getting desperate and complicated… Ian comes back into her life.

And that’s when everything shifts.

Their romance is messy in the best way. Emotional. Complicated. Slow to unfold.

The tension lingers. The pride clashes. The longing simmers.

If you love a story where two people have to work through pride, hurt, and misunderstanding before finally finding their way to each other, this one is peak historical romance.

Final Thoughts

Historical romance is one of my favorite cozy genres because it gives you everything.

Longing. Luxury. Drama. Passion. Emotional payoff.

It’s escapism without feeling empty. The worlds are rich, the conflicts feel real, and when the love lands, it lands.

If you’re in your soft, escapist reading era, these are beautiful places to start.

And if you’ve read any of these, or have your own best historical romance novels list, tell me. I am always looking for my next comfort read.

Happy reading, babe.
